Xeomin® & Botox® for TMJ and Muscle-Related Jaw Pain

Not every patient with jaw pain is a candidate for Xeomin® or Botox® injections. At our practice, these medications are never recommended as a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, they are considered only after a comprehensive evaluation by Dr. Sainsbury, a board-certified orofacial pain specialist, to determine whether muscle overactivity is contributing to your symptoms.

During your examination, we evaluate the muscles of the jaw, face, head, and neck, assess your jaw joints (TMJs), review your medical history, and identify the underlying source of your pain. If your symptoms are primarily related to muscle tension, clenching, grinding, or myofascial pain, Xeomin® or Botox® may be recommended as part of a personalized treatment plan. For many patients, these injections can help reduce muscle hyperactivity, decrease pain, improve jaw function, and lessen the frequency of tension-related headaches.

Because every patient is different, injections are often combined with other therapies—such as oral appliance therapy, physical rehabilitation, laser therapy, or other evidence-based treatments—to address the underlying cause of your condition rather than simply masking symptoms. Our goal is to provide the right treatment for the right diagnosis, helping you achieve long-term relief and improved quality of life.

How do I know if I'm a candidate?

You may be a candidate for Xeomin® or Botox® therapy if you experience:

  • Chronic jaw muscle pain or tenderness

  • Frequent clenching or teeth grinding (bruxism)

  • Muscle-related tension headaches

  • Jaw fatigue when chewing or talking

  • Limited jaw opening caused by muscle tightness

  • Enlargement of the jaw muscles from chronic clenching

  • Persistent facial muscle pain that has not responded to conservative treatment

The only way to know if these injections are appropriate is through a comprehensive evaluation. Our examination is designed to identify the true source of your pain so that we can recommend the most effective treatment—not simply the most popular one.

Why do we often recommend Xeomin®?

Both Xeomin® and Botox® work by temporarily relaxing overactive muscles. Dr. Sainsbury will determine which product is most appropriate based on your diagnosis, medical history, and treatment goals. In many cases, our practice prefers Xeomin® because it contains no accessory proteins, making it an excellent option for many patients requiring therapeutic muscle treatment.
