Ear pain, pressure, or a plugged sensation often makes people think they have an ear infection. But when an ear exam does not reveal an infection or another obvious ear problem, the source of the discomfort may actually be the jaw. Temporomandibular joint disorders, commonly called TMD or TMJ disorders, can cause symptoms that feel as though they are coming directly from the ear.
At TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre of San Diego in La Mesa, we evaluate jaw function and surrounding structures to determine whether TMJ dysfunction may be contributing to persistent ear symptoms.
The temporomandibular joints are located just in front of the ears and connect the lower jaw to the skull. The joints, jaw muscles, and nearby structures are closely connected, which is why irritation or dysfunction in this area can create referred pain around the ear.
For some patients in La Mesa, TMJ-related discomfort may not initially feel like jaw pain at all. Instead, they may notice ear pressure, fullness, aching, ringing, or discomfort around the ear without signs of an infection.
Ear symptoms may be more likely to have a jaw-related component when they occur along with other signs of TMD, such as:
• Jaw pain or tenderness near the ears
• Clicking, popping, or grinding when opening the mouth
• Headaches or facial pain
• Jaw stiffness or limited movement
• Pain while chewing or yawning
• Teeth grinding or clenching
• Neck or shoulder discomfort
TMD can cause earaches and other symptoms near the ear, but ear pressure can also come from conditions such as Eustachian tube dysfunction, allergies, or other ear-related problems. This is why identifying the actual source of the symptoms is important before beginning treatment.
When you visit our La Mesa office, we look beyond the ear discomfort itself. Our comprehensive evaluations may include assessing jaw range of motion, skeletal structure, muscles, tendons, ligaments, oral structures, and other factors that may be contributing to your symptoms. Our goal is to determine whether the discomfort is connected to the TM joints, jaw muscles, clenching, grinding, or another source of orofacial pain.
Treatment depends on what we find during your evaluation. At TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre of San Diego, we develop personalized, primarily non-surgical treatment plans based on each patient's needs. Care may include orthopedic appliance therapy, physical medicine, lifestyle modifications, nutritional guidance, or other therapies designed to improve jaw function and reduce strain on affected tissues.
