Snoring can affect more than the person making the noise. It can disrupt a partner’s sleep, contribute to daytime fatigue, and sometimes signal an underlying sleep-related breathing problem. At TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre of San Diego, we help patients throughout San Diego and surrounding areas better understand what may be contributing to their snoring and whether further sleep screening is appropriate.
For certain patients, NightLase laser therapy can help reduce primary snoring. It may also serve as a supportive treatment for patients already using CPAP or oral appliance therapy for obstructive sleep apnea.
NightLase is a non-surgical laser treatment that targets soft tissue in the throat and soft palate. Controlled laser energy gently heats the tissue, encouraging it to become firmer and tighter. Because loose soft tissue can vibrate as air passes through the airway during sleep, tightening this tissue may help reduce the vibration responsible for snoring.
Treatment is performed inside the mouth without incisions or needles. The number and timing of sessions depend on each patient's airway anatomy, symptoms, and response to treatment.
NightLase should not be viewed as a replacement for CPAP or oral appliance therapy when those treatments have been prescribed for obstructive sleep apnea. Instead, it may be incorporated as an adjunctive or supportive therapy for appropriate patients.
For example, reducing soft tissue vibration and addressing areas that contribute to snoring may complement an existing sleep apnea treatment plan. Patients should continue using prescribed CPAP or oral appliance therapy unless their treating healthcare provider recommends a change.
Not everyone who snores has sleep apnea, but persistent or disruptive snoring deserves attention. An airway and sleep evaluation can help us determine whether your symptoms appear consistent with primary snoring or whether additional sleep apnea screening may be appropriate.
During an evaluation, we may consider:
• How frequently and loudly you snore
• Daytime tiredness or poor-quality sleep
• Whether breathing pauses have been noticed during sleep
• Your airway anatomy and soft tissue
• Previous sleep apnea testing or diagnosis
• Current CPAP or oral appliance therapy
Identifying what is behind the snoring helps guide the next step instead of simply trying to quiet the symptom.
For appropriate candidates, NightLase provides a non-surgical approach to addressing soft tissue associated with nighttime snoring. There is no mask, hose, or incision involved, and patients can typically return to their normal routine following treatment.
Our goal at TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre of San Diego is to look at the complete picture. Whether you are dealing with primary snoring, wondering if you should be screened for sleep apnea, or looking for additional support alongside CPAP or oral appliance therapy, we can help determine which approach makes sense for you.
